National women football league champions AS Kigali suffered their first league defeat since 2014 in a 2-1 upset against Kamonyi on Wednesday.

The defeat ended AS Kigali’s unbeaten streak that stretched over two seasons.Seeking a record-extending 8th consecutive league title, AS Kigali won the last two championships unbeaten and Kamonyi becomes the first team to beat them in nearly three seasons.

The loss for Grace Nyinawumuntu’s side puts them under pressure despite holding the advantage ahead of their close rivals. AS Kigali top the table with 31 points from 12 matches, 8 points ahead of Kamonyi, who have played two games less.

"Kamonyi were the better side on Wednesday, they deserved to win. We’re disappointed to lose our unbeaten run but have to accept and move on, start thinking and preparing for the next game,” said Nyinawumuntu.

Nyinawumuntu, who is also the national team head coach added, "We must make sure we don’t repeat the mistakes we made in today’s game in the remaining four.”

Elsewhere, bottom-placed Nyagatare FC once again suffered a humiliating 10-0 loss at hands of Les Lionnes at Musheri grounds in Nyagatare District.

The league continues on Saturday with holders AS Kigali hosting Golden Generation at Kigali Regional Stadium, winless Nyagatare host Bugesera, Kamonyi play away to Rambura while Inyemera will be up against Les Lionnes in Gicumbi.
