The drive—which coincides with the national celebrations to mark the World Tourism Day 2016—is aimed at encouraging citizens to travel and experience what the Rwandan tourism sector has to offer.
World Tourism Day (WTD) is marked on September 27, every year, and Rwanda will mark the day on Saturday October 1, in Huye District.
"Rwanda is among the most acclaimed destinations in Africa and we invite locals to bear witness to the experience. There is a wrong mentality among us, to think that traveling, touring different places around the country and going on holidays is for rich people or those from abroad, but the opportunity to discover the country as a tourist is one that should be accessible to all,” Belise Kariza, RDB’s Chief Tourism Officer stated.
While addressing journalists, at RDB headquarters on Thursday, Kariza said that the RDB will provide free transportation and free access to historical and cultural sites to Rwandans and non-Rwandans residing in Rwanda, who will be part of the campaign.
However, RDB will not provide accommodation and meals during the two-day travel experience. A 26-seater bus has been prepared for those who wish to be part of the experience on the first-come, first-served basis.
The traveling team will depart Kigali on Friday morning (8am); and the campaign will focus on historical and cultural routes in Kamonyi, Ruhango before arriving at Mt. Huye "Ibisi bya Huye” in Huye District to mark the tourism day.
There are about 12 culture and historical destinations to be visited during this trail.
"By consuming local products residents will also contribute to the country’s brand narrative,” Kariza added.
She was quick to highlight the fact that traveling opens up one’s mind, changes the way people think and its fun—rallying Rwandans to cultivate the culture of traveling and touring different destinations in their country.
The Domestic Tourism Campaign will be actively steered by the hashtag #JumpOnBusRW & #TemberuRwanda.
