NATIONAL women football league giants AS Kigali are looking to retain the league title. Should they beat Kamonyi on Wednesday afternoon, AS Kigali will be crowned champions for a record 8th consecutive time.

AS Kigali and archrivals Kamonyi square-off this afternoon at Remera-Rukoma grounds at 2pm while Nyagatare will be up against Les Lionnes at Mutunda playgrounds in Nyagatare at the same time. On Sunday, Grace Nyinawumuntu’s AS Kigali played a goalless draw against Les Lionnes, the first time for the City of Kigali-sponsored side to drop points this season.

Currently topping the table standings with 31 points, AS Kigali have won ten and drawn one of their 11 league games so far.

Elsewhere on Sunday, second-placed Kamonyi overcame Inyemera in a 3-1 win. Bugesera defeated Golden Generation 2-0 while new entrants Gakenke humiliated struggling Nyagatare in a 6-0 emphatic victory.

Over the weekend, the league resumed after a break to allow the national team, She-Amavubi, compete in the inaugural CECAFA Women’s championship staged in Uganda earlier this month.

Should the 7-time reigning champions retain the title, they will have won the championship with four league games in hand against Rambura, Golden Generation, Nyagatare and Inyemera.

AS Kigali lead the table with 31 points, 8 points ahead of second-placed Kamonyi. Rambura stand third with 21 points, Les Lionnes and Bugesera rank fourth and fifth with 19 points each while Gakenke are in the sixth place with 15 points.
