Top contenders Duncan Mugabe from Uganda and DR Congo’s Denis Indondo faceoff in a highly anticipated Rwanda Tennis Open final on Sunday afternoon at Amahoro National Stadium outdoor tennis courts.

Two of the biggest tennis players in the region have been outstanding since the start of the one-week long tournament whose winner will bag the US$1000 prize money.

 Uganda’s number one Mugabe, a famous name in the East African region, reached the final after overcoming DR Congo’s Surma Nkulufa 7-5, 6-3 while Indondo knocked out Kenya’s number two Ibrahim Kibet. The reigning African champion Indondo beat Kibet 7-6, 6-4.

In the women’s category, Kenya’s number one Shufa Changawa is currently playing DR Congo’s Onyo Nancy in the final. In the semi-finals, Changawa beat DR Congo’s Charlenne Wantona 6-0, 6-0 while Nancy easily defeated Rwanda’s number one Meganne Ingabire 6-0, 6-1.

In the Amateurs category that featured only local players, Theoneste Bahati will play Christian Kaningu at 11:15am.

Meanwhile in the doubles category that concluded yesterday, Indondo and Nkulufa from DR Congo won the US$300 prize money after beating Rwanda’s Olivier Havugimana and Dieudonne Habiyambere 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s fray, Changawa and Nancy defeated Ingabire and Gisele Umumararungu from Rwanda 6-3, 6-3, to pocket US$300 prize money.
