GICUMBI—Two teachers and five students from Gaseke College have been placed under police custody after being arrested for spreading Genocide ideology.

Director of Gaseke College Juvenal Muberuka and Joseph Mwumvaneza, a teacher there, have been accused of spreading the ideology on the college campus.

The students’ names have not been disclosed. Minister of state for education Joseph Murekeraho warned students and teachers to desist from the bad habit.

"Those who will be caught shall be punished heavily regardless of their age”, Murekeraho said.

The warning comes after 14 students were traumatized after written letter containing hate propaganda were found in the women’s dormitory. The letter called upon Hutu students to stop associating with Tutsi counterparts.

Genocide ideology has a long history in the school, beginning in 2004. Teachers at the college have been accused in the past of being ‘notorious’ Genocide ideology propagandists. One teacher, Eugene Karirima was arrested earlier by police.

Students accused director Juvenal Muberuka specifically for not reporting ideological activities to relevant authorities.

A Gicumbi security meeting led by the Mayor Bonane Nyangezi dismissed the college’s entire administration and a number of teachers in an effort to root out the ideology.

The mayor advised students to desist from propaganda and concentrate on their studies.

"There is zero tolerance towards genocide ideology”, the mayor said.
