Rwanda’s third seed Habiyambere beat his compatriot Emmanuel Harerimana in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to qualify for the second round while Uganda’s number one and big favourite Mugabe easily defeated Burundian Abdoul Ishaka 6-0, 6-1 to progress into round two.
DR Congo’s reigning African champion Denis Indondo (winner of 2015 All African Games) beat his countryman Fabrice Mutamu 6-0, 6-2 to make it to the next round.
Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Rwanda’s number two Gisele Umumararungu beat her compatriot Flavia Kayitesi in straights sets 6-0, 6-1 on Tuesday.
First round matches continue today when Kenya’s Ibrahim Kibet take on Issa Cyuma from Burundi while Rwanda’s number one Ernest Habiyambere will be up against Tanzania’s Omar Mouhamed, with Olivier Havugimana (Rwanda number two) locking horns with his countryman Etienne Niyigena.
In the women’s fray, Rwanda’s number one Meganne Ingabire will face Henriette Mutesi, DR Congo’s Charlotte Wantona take on Grace Ndahunga from Rwanda while Frenchwomen Geraldine will play against Rwanda’s Evelyne Kwizera.
