The military tribunal yesterday denied bail to Maj Dr Aimable Rugomwa, who is charged with manslaughter in a case where a young man succumbed to head injuries earlier this month in Kanombe Sector, Kicukiro District.

Rugomwa is jointly accused with Mamerto Nsanzimfura, his relative, of having a role in the death of Theogene Mbarushimana, 19, who died on September 4.

Rugomwa was denied freedom on grounds that he may jump bail, while his co-accused was denied on grounds that if released, he would interfere with the ongoing investigations.

According to prosecution, Rugomwa, on the fateful night, dragged Mbarushimana into his house and severely battered him, accusing him of theft.

Rugomwa, who entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday, said that in injuring the deceased, he was acting in self-defence, after a fight ensued when he found Mbarushimana trying to vandalise his car inside his compound.
