Steven Katwiremu has been named captain of Rwanda’s national golf team for next week’s East African Golf Challenge in Mombasa, Kenya.

The experienced golfer will lead an eight-man team which also includes Davis Kashaka, Rwanda Open runner up Olivier Munyaneza, Celestine Habineza, Ernest Ndayisenga, Fraterne Rubangura, Jules Dusabe and Emmanuel Nsengamungu.

The Kigali Golf Club president Jack Kayonga is expected to lead the delegation. On top of hosts (Kenya), golfers from Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi are also expected to grace the four-day show piece whose action gets underway next Tuesday, November 18 at the Leisure Lodge Beach & Golf Resort Club.

During the three-day event, Munyaneza will renew his rivalry with Uganda’s Vincent ‘Araali’ Byamukama who beat him to the Rwanda Open title last Sunday. According to Kashaka who also doubles as the team manager, the team was selected on the basis of form.

"The team was named on the basis of the players’ recent form. Most of them have had consistent performances in recent competition,” Kashaka said.

After winning the last six editions, Kenya are hot favourites to reclaim the event. Last year, Rwanda failed to make a genuine challenge to the title and finished in a distant fourth position.

Rwanda’s best performance in the competition came in 2005 when they finished second after beating Uganda and Tanzania.
