Benediction Club’s rider Gasore Hategeka won the ‘Central Challenge’ race from Kayonza to Muhanga, a distance of 122km, on Saturday.

The race is 8th on the Rwanda Cycling Cup calendar.

Gasore, 29, with help from his former teammates and now Team Bike Aid rider Hadi Janvier, dominated in a breakaway from Rwamagana town to Kamonyi before the latter eased to let Hategeka win in a time of 3 hours, 11 minutes and 3 seconds.

With seven races completed and two left, Gasore leads with 152 points, followed by Amis Sportif riders Jean Claude Uwizeye (138 points) and Joseph Areruya, with 132 points.

The remaining two races are Kivu Belt from Karongi to Rusizi (due October 22) and the Nyungwe Challenge from Rusizi-Huye, slated for October 23.

Beatha Ingabire of Amis Sportifs de Rwamagana won the women’s race from Gitcyinyoni to Muhanga, which covered a total distance of 43km after clocking 1 hour and 37 minutes.

Meanwhile, Benediction Club’s youngster Eric Imanizabayo won the junior category from Rwamagana to Muhanga while the Amis Sportifs rider Joseph Areruya won the the U-23 category.

Areruya took home Rwf 60,000, Imanizabayo and Ingabire pocketed Rwf50,000 each while Hategeka walked away with Rwf100,000.
