RWANDA’S chess team departed for Dresden, Germany unnoticed earlier this week to take part in the World Olympiad that started last evening.

The event that will climax on November 25 is the biggest event on the world chess calendar which pits the world’s best chess players against one another.

Due to lack of funds, the national chess federation (Ferwade) was forced to trim the team ending with only five board masters and a coach.

The national team is constituted of Alex Ruzigura, Maxence Murara, Godfrey Kabera, Eugene Mugerwa, Joseph Ngendo and Jean-Protogene Munyehirwe and head coach Williams Abiye.

Among the five, Kabera and Murara are the highest ranked players on the international rankings with 1949 and 1682 points respectively.

The national chess federation (Ferwade) has represented Rwanda in four successive international Chess Olympiad organized by World chess federation (FIDE), namely, the 34th Chess Olympiad in 2000 hosted in Slovenia, Turkey chess Olympiad in 2002, Spain Chess Olympiad in 2004 and Italy chess Olympiad in 2006.
