Rwanda women sitting volleyball team will face top ranked China in Pool B opening match of the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games due to officially get underway on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro. The game between Rwanda and China will be played on Saturday.
Rwanda, which is the sole representative of the entire African continent at biggest international multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities, will face Iran in the second game, two days later before battling it out with 2nd ranked United States of America, on September 14.
China are the defending women champions, the Netherlands took silver while the United States claimed bronze at the last Paralympic Games in 2012 in London.
In the men’s category which starts on Friday, Brazil will face USA, Egypt will be up against Germany, hosts Brazil will take on Canada, while Ukraine face the Netherlands on the first day.
Bosnia and Herzegovina won gold four years ago. Rwanda men’s team was in London but didn’t win a single game.
Meanwhile, Rwandan Paralympian Hermas Muvunyi has opted to compete in the 1500m T-46 category at the Rio despite also qualifying for the 400m T-46 race.
Muvunyi, 27, who is the captain of Team Rwanda, confirmed the development on Friday after arriving in Rio de Janeiro only to find out that the two races are scheduled on the same day, September 16, at João Havelange Stadium.
He qualified for both categories during the 2015 IAAF World Athletics Championship last October in Doha, Qatar.
