Rwanda’s female leading tennis player Meganne Ingabire has upped her preparations ahead of making her debut in the 2016 Rwanda Open that is scheduled for September 15-25 at Amahoro National Stadium tennis courts.
Rwanda Open, which was last held in the year 2001, will attract the top players from countries in the East African region and beyond. On top of the trophy, the winner will also take home US$1,000 (men) and US$750 (women) in prize money.
Ingabire, 27, who will be among the favorites to claim the women title, is currently getting through her paces at Cercle Sportif de Kigali in Rugunga.
She said, "This is a big tournament that will attract the best players in the region, so I have to be well prepared both mentally and physically. I expect tough competition, but it is always good to compete against the best, it helps you to improve and become a better player,”
The ten-day event is organised by Rwanda Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC). It is expected to attract best tennis; amateurs and professionals from EAC countries and other regional countries such as Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and DR Congo.
Ingabire, who reached the final of the 2015 Uganda Tennis Open on her first appearance, added, "Given the anticipated intensity of this competition, I am trying increase my daily work outs in order to be in the best shape possible before the competition starts.”
Rwanda’s number one is training alongside her archrival and friend Gisele Umumarungu, who is ranked number two. The duo is likely to be partners in the doubles category.
