Association Sportive de Kigali Football Club (AS Kigali) is set to organize the first of what will be an annual pre-season tournament which will bring together the top teams of the Zone V countries
The tournament will go by the official name ‘Inter-Cities Trophy’, according to the organizer. The first edition will be held from September 6-16 at different stadiums in Kigali, Rubavu and Huye.
However, this year, it will be called ‘AS Kigali Pre-season Football Tournament’ before it changes the name next year.
Three clubs from DR Congo will compete in the tournament including; Sanga Balende, Dauphin Noir and AS Vita while Rwanda has APR FC, Rayon Sports, Mukura VS, AS Kigali and Police FC.
The eight teams have been drawn into two groups and matches will be played at Kigali Regional Stadium, Umuganda Stadium and Huye Stadium.
The City of Kigali Vice Mayor, Parfait Busabizwa, while addressing a press conference on Friday evening at City Hall, noted that tournament is aimed at helping Rwandan clubs prepare for the upcoming 2016/17 season, which is set to start later this month.
"This is a good tournament which will help our clubs to prepare for the upcoming season. The involvement of clubs from DR Congo will make the tournament more competitive,” said Busabizwa.
The semi-finals will be played on September 14 while the final and third place on September 16, at Amahoro National Stadium.
