RE: "Police launch new highway traffic control mechanism” (The New Times, August 27).

Great idea to catch traffic violators — this is done everywhere in the world. I think both road safety education and stiff fines are critical to make our roads safer.  

There is complete and utter disregard for traffic rules and basic courtesy by drivers in Rwanda. If these callous/criminal drivers do not know the rules, they shouldn’t be on the roads and should be fined so heavily that they seek the appropriate education.

If I were the police I would raise those fine targets even higher to deter bad behavior on the roads. Our children’s lives are constantly at risk. I would fine every single incident (for both cars and motorbikes) of not stopping at zebra-crossing, random stopping on the road to greet people, violation of speed limits and overtaking, mobile phone use while driving, creating illegal lanes, unbuckled children standing behind driving parents or in front seats, broken lights, emissions…

Please Rwanda National Police, fine until everyone is forced to follow the rules.
