Gilbert Micomyiza and Andre Masozera, the new councilors of Kigali city, were sworn in at the City Hall yesterday.

The two councilors who will serve a five-year term, were elected to replace Alfred Munyentwari, who passed away and Mediateur Mpunga, who resigned.

The swearing in ceremony was presided over by Charles Kaliwabo, the president of the High Court.

Vincent Munyeshyaka, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, urged them to uphold their oath and prioritise the interests of the public.

"Work for the common good of the public. In addition to your ability, work in unison, be courageous and you will certainly deliver. The city is the mirror through which the image of the country is reflected,” he said.

"The work you are entrusted with is voluntary and does not pay but it doesn’t mean it’s done anyhow. You should be accountable and work in accordance with the law,” he added.

The new councilors committed to deliver on their tasks.

Micomyiza, who will be representing the youth in the city council, said he has been working as a youth coordinator in Gasabo District, thus, he had the necessary experience.

He explained that volunteerism is a virtue that everyone should embrace.

"Patriotism forces you to find something you can do for your community and your country. Serving the community is more important than money,” he said.

Masozera, who has been a member of Gasabo District’s council for the last five years, said the work requires altruism and care.

"Before you advice, you have to be mindful of the potential impact of your advice,” he said.

The city council has 33 councilors.
