Mountain Classic Athletics Club dominated this year’s National Athletics Championship, scooping five gold medals in the one-day event that took place on Sunday at Amahoro National Stadium.

Over 127 athletes graced the annual track and field event which attracted a total of nine local clubs vying for individual and team trophies in nine different disciplines, both in men and women categories.

Mt. Classic claimed a total of five gold medals (three in men and two in the women category); Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle and APR scooped three gold medals in the men’s category while New Athletics Stars (NAS) won three gold medals in the women category.

Mt.Classic claimed gold in the men’s triple jump and long jump, through Fabrice Kakiriho (12m) and (5m and 70cm) respectively while James Sugira won the 1500m race clocking 3:48:89.

In the women category, the Kigali-based club also won the triple and long jump gold through Aline Batamuriza, who cleared 3m:10cm and 3m:90cm respectively.

Vision JN claimed gold in the men’s 100m and 200m through Pascal Nshimiyimana, who clocked 11:18 and 23:21 respectively plus 400m gold through Japhet Nsengyiyumva, who posted 49:88.

On the other hand, NAS dominated the women category, claiming the 400m gold through Honorine Iribagiza, who clocked 56:78 while Beathe Nishimwe scooped 800m and 1500m double, posting 2:11:07 and 4:37:86 respectively.

APR’s Celestin Nkundumuremyi won the men’s 800m using 1:57:23 while his teammate Potien Ntawuyirushintege claimed gold in the men’s 5000m, posting 14:26:32 and John Hakizimana took gold in 10,000m after using 30:11:28.

Joseline Muhawenimana of Burera Athletics Club won the women’s 100m in a time of 13:65 while Kamonyi’s Jeannette Uwambajimana took the 3,000m race in ten 10 minutes, four seconds and 75 microseconds.

The other clubs that took part and didn’t win any gold medals include Sec Athletics, Nyamasheke and Gasore Foundation Athletics Club.
