RWANDA’s leading tennis star Dieudonne Habiyambere is keen to win the 2016 Rwanda Open Tennis Championships, scheduled for mid September.

The third edition of Rwanda Open, to take place at Amahoro stadium courts, is the first since 2001.

It is expected to attract top tennis players from Rwanda and the region, in both men and women’s categories.

The 34-year-old Habiyambere is optimistic about his chances to win the competition, the country’s biggest tennis tournament with US$1,000 at stake.

"The federation is yet to officially confirm to us when exactly the tournament will open, but I am personally ready, I am training hard to be in the best shape possible. It’s going to be a grueling tournament with exciting prizes,” Habiyambere told Times Sport.

Rwanda’s number two, added: "Every competitor will be gunning for the title, anyone can beat anyone in such a competition. There is still a lot of work to do during preparations but so far so good, I am improving my game by the day.”

Countries expected to participate in the tournament include Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and hosts Rwanda.
