For all their efforts, they walked away with Rwf24 million.
The trio of Safi ‘Madiba’ Niyibikora, James Manzi and Muhammad ‘Nizzo Kaboss’ Nshimiyimana beat close rivals RnB singer Christopher Muneza (first runners up) and last year’s first runners-up Bruce Melodie, who came third during the grand finale.
Urban Boys have had previously twice missed out on the annual participation, withdrawing from the 2015 edition.
Throughout the pre-finale road shows staged around the country, Urban Boys had proved to be a force to reckon with, going by the popularity of their performances, the close competition from Bruce Melodie and Christopher notwithstanding.
On the grand finale night in the Amahoro National Stadium parking lot, the boys came dressed in black suits to perform ‘Till I die’ and ‘Tayari’. And the crowd were chanting their name throughout the evening.
It was not surprising when they were eventually pronounced as the ultimate winners, even as they were quick to go on their knees in appreciation, before receiving their dummy cheque from the Bralirwa managing director Jonathan Hall.
"For me Urban Boys deserved it. They have really worked hard and released song after song, this is a reward to their hard work,” said Sandra Umutoniwase, a fan of the group.
Many of their rivals were also seen nodding when the group were declared the winners, except perhaps Bruce Melodie, who most likely believed this was his year having finished second to last year’s winner Knowles.
Urban Boys have released dozens of songs, including regional and continental collabos, over the last seven or so years, some going on to become hits.
