My name is Mahoro Immaculate and I am 12 years old. When I was younger, I used to laugh at any person with a disability, be it a kid or an adult.

I recall a time when I laughed at a crippled man who had one leg. My mother rebuked me, but I saw no problem in laughing at her because she was abnormal.

Last year, when I was coming from a trip in Uganda, I was involved in a fatal accident that claimed many people. I was one of the lucky survivors, though I lost my left leg.

Right now, I am lame and I feel bad whenever other children laugh at me. We do not know what tomorrow holds for us as kids, but we should show compassion to disabled people.

They are also people like others and were created in God’s image. Many societies treat disabled people like outcasts, even in schools children don’t like sharing with them.

This discourages us so much yet we need to be encouraged. Before you laugh at anyone with disabilities, put yourself in their shoes and see if it is a happy feeling to be treated like outcasts.

We should always remember that we are equal in the eyes of God, since we were created in His image.
