Rwanda 27-24 Tanzania

Defending champions Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) handball team registered a good start in the on-going East African Military Games that started on Monday at Amahoro national stadium.

In a tough competitive game played on Wednesday morning, RDF overcame Tanzania by 27-24 goals to register their first win of the tournament. Gilbert Mutuyimana netted seven times while Zacharie Tuyishime found the net five times to guide the defending champions to three crucial points.

Bonner Gekisanga (eight goals) and Ally Khamis (four goals) were the best scorers for Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) although their effort was not enough to push their team to today’s win.

"I am very excited that we have won our first game, Tanzania is a tough team they had prepared well and gave us a hard time. However we managed to work as a team and got the three points ,” said RDF head coach Anaclet Bagirishya in an interview with Times Sport after the game

Meanwhile in the opening game, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) defeated Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), 43-35. Nicholas Otieno (16 goals) and Nicholas Ireri (eight goals) were the best performers for Kenya while Felix Mukunzi (11 goals) Alwor Unga Chestor (10 goals) were the best scorers on the UPDF side.

The teams will play again on Friday when Tanzania and Uganda will face off before Uganda plays Rwanda while Tanzania will be locking horns with Kenya. The last game will be played Tuesday next week when Rwanda will be battling with eight-time record winners Kenya.

The four countries; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda will play each other in a round robin format and the team that wins the most games, will be crowned champions.

The East African Military Games and Cultural Events were launched in 2005 and until 2015, Kenya has dominated the handball competitions until Rwanda ended their eight-year grip on the title last year in Kampala.
