Defending champions Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) handball team is targeting to retain the title when the 2016 East African Military Games handball competition kicks off today at Amahoro Stadium.

Hosts Rwanda begin their title defence against Tanzania, a game that will be preceded by the clash between Uganda and Kenya.

"We have prepared well for the competition, and as hosts and defending champions, there is no any other target other than to retain the title. I hope we can make a good start against Tanzania,” said RDF head coach Anaclet Bagirishya.

The four countries; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda will play each other in a round robin format and the team that wins the most games, will be crowned champions.

The East African Military Games and Cultural Events were launched in 2005 and until 2015, Kenya has dominated the handball competitions until Rwanda ended their eight-year grip on the title last year in Kampala.
