Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) kicked off the 10th East African Military Games yesterday with a disappointing result losing to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the curtain raising football match at Amahoro national stadium.
Rwanda is hosting this year’s edition that has attracted four countries; Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and hosts Rwanda. They will compete in four sports categories namely; football, cross country, netball, basketball and handball.
In the opening match, Rwanda who are defending champions began their title defence against Kenya but lost 1-0 in front of huge support of home fans.
It was the first managerial game of APR head coach Gilbert Yaounde Kanyakore whose team featured almost all the new APR signings including goal keeper Emery Mvuyekure, left back Emmanuel Imanishimwe, midfielders Amran Nshimiyimana and Muhadjiri Hakizimana and forwards Innocent Habyarimana and Onesme Twizerimana.
Kenya scored early in the 10th minute through Mohammed Hassan.
Rwanda tried to get back into the game but failed to beat the compact defence of Kenya.
"It’s disappointing that we have lost our first game but it was the first day and we have a lot of new players that need a lot of time to integrate but it is still early we shall bounce back,” said coach Kanyankore
Meanwhile Day 2 will see athletes from all the countries compete for the first medals in cross country race. IPRC-Kicuciro is hosting the 10km event that kicked off at 10am on Tuesday.
