University of Kibungo (UNIK) head coach Dominique Ntawangundi has heaped praise on his team after winning the 2016 KAVC Memorial volleyball tournament for the second consecutive years.

The Rwandan league champions defeated Sky of Uganda 3-2 in the men’s final at at Lugogo Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

The Ugandan side won the opening set 28-26, but Ntawangundi's team recovered to take won second set 25-20 while the home side claimed the third set 25-20 before the visitors easily took the fourth and fifth 25-9 and 15-11 respectively.

After winning the title with the Ngoma-based club, Ntawangundi said, "To win this tournament for a second year running it is something special, not only for UNIK supports but all Rwandans.”

"We did our best to retain the title, and I am thankful for the players, who stuck to our game plan from start to finish. We played against strong team in the final, which was at home and have many supporters but we have managed to put their morale down,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), who went into the tournament as the women defending camions, lost to the Kenyan side Aspire 3-0, which was comprised by Kenyan professional players.

The tournament debutants dominated the Rwanda league champion 25-10, 25-18 and 25-17.

RRA left-attack Charlotte Nzayisenga was named best server, while Aspire’s left-attack Mercy Moin was best receive. Best setter, was Aspire’s Jane Washu and best broker, was Judith Edith Wisa, RRA’s right-attack Seraphine Mukantambara was best attack while Backsides Agala was named the MVP.

In men’s category, Isiagi Elisa of Sky was best libero, best blocker Placide Sibomana from UNIK, Patrick Kavalo was named the best attack and Elisha Aliwa of Sky was best receiver.

Mwaniki Jimmy from Nairobi Water named best receiver, Emma Kato was best setter while Sky left-attack Cuthbert Malinga was the tournament MVP.
