The Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA), in conjunction with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, have nominated the Kenyan city of Eldoret to host the 2016 edition of Brookside FEASSSA Games.

The regional post-primary games are scheduled for August 25 to September 4. The city is located in Western Kenya, a few miles from the Uganda-Kenya boarder of Busia.

Initially, the city of Thika, 40 miles North East of Nairobi, had been picked as the host, but the FESSSA technical team and Kenyan Ministry of Education shifted the games to Eldoret after finding out that the venues and general infrastructure in Thika were not sufficient.

Justus Mugisha, the FEASSSA president, said in a statement that the decision to change from Thika to Eldoret was reached considering the sports facilities and infrastructure in both cities after two site visits.

"We realised that Eldoret had the best facilities, ranging from accommodation to playing fields. Eldoret boasts of the multipurpose 10,000 seater Kipchoge Keino Stadium that also has an internationally recommended Tartan running turf,” Mugisha said.

Kenya’s forth-rated City, also boasts of investments by Kenya’s top athletes, which Mugisha says will also inspire most upcoming athletes from the secondary schools in the member states namely Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Zanzibar and hosts Kenya.

Last year, Rwanda hosted the 14th edition of the annual regional competitions in Huye district, Southern Province.

The hosts won a total 13 medals including 6 gold medals to finish in the third place after Kenya (27 medals) and Uganda (23 medals). Burundi, Tanzania and South Sudan finished 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
