EASTERN PROVINCE

NGOMA — Five councillors of the Ngoma District Advisory Council (DAC) have resigned.

The councillors tendered their resignation letters recently with the  DAC accepted their resignations on Saturday, at an impromptu meeting.

They include, Emerance Mukakimenyi, formerly representing women, Marcel Mutabaruka, Rukumberi Sector councilor and Julius Kansiime, a councilor for Remera Sector and the RPF chairman in the district.

Others are Emmanuel Gasana, a councilor for Kazo Sector and Clement Kirenga a councilor for Mugesera Sector.

Kansiime was also the district vice-Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic development, while Kirenga was the DAC secretary.

They cited different reasons for their quitting the council ranging from need to pursue further studies to getting other jobs.

This mass resignation is the first of its kind since the DAC was formed.

The meeting chaired by the DAC President, Francis Bushaija confirmed that the five posts are now vacant.

Bushaija, explained that most of the councilors who quit, had secured other jobs else where which were a hindrance to fulfilling their entailed duties.

"These people were no longer attending council meetings and were no longer meeting people who elected them to hear their problems,” Bushaija said.

"Accepting to be elected as a councillor means that you have accepted to be exemplary and be responsible, committed to your work because you are working like a volunteer who is not paid for the services rendered,” he added.

Noting that those who resigned had failed in their work, Bushaija, called on residents to always elect representatives capable of serving them, who will be near them to listen to their problems and solve them quickly.

He said that they would send the resolutions of the meeting to the area governor, for approval and the governor’s decision will be pronounced in seven days.

"After the Governor has replied to us we will arrange with the District Electoral Commission to fill all these vacant posts,” Bushaija said.
