RE: "South Sudan: Riek Machar leaves Juba” (The New Times, July 14).
Khartoum must be chortling uncontrollably at how South Sudanese "independence” has turned out — exactly as they hoped and predicted, with Salva Kiir and Riek Machar at each other’s throats every time they are within striking distance and doing everything in their power to turn their Dinka and Nuer fellow tribesmen against each other.
Both men, as well as their closest military subordinates and political aides, should be tried for treason against the people of South Sudan and banned from ever again holding leadership positions.
They are unfit to lead a village, let alone a newly-minted country that must knit together a multitude of tribes into a single nation. This isn’t an opinion: they have proved themselves criminally incompetent by their very own murderous actions.
Dr John Garang de Mabior, he always favoured a secular unitary Sudan without northern pseudo-Arab (the majority of northern Sudanese are really not Arab even though Arabic-speakers, e.g. the Hadendawa of Northeastern Sudan, all the way from Ghadareef, Kassalah, Port Sudan, etc) domination of a multicultural and multiracial Sudan, must be turning in his grave at this turn of events.
