TEN-MAN Rayon Sports beat old rivals SC Kiyovu 2-0 in the national football league on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium to keep a firm grip on a likely second position finish in the league.
Goals from defender Thierry Manzi in the 5th minute and forward Dominique Savio Nshuti in the 78th minute were enough to hand Djum Masudi’s team maximum points ahead of the remaining two matches.
"We have lost the title, but our aim is to win the remaining matches. We will keep working hard until the end of the season,” goalscorer Manzi said after the match.
The newly crowned Peace Cup champions played for almost an hour without their Malian striker Ismailia Diarra after he was sent off for improper behaviour following a clash with SC Kiyovu defender, Alexis Ngirimana.
Going into the remaining two matches against Espoir FC and Musanze FC, Rayon Sports are all but guaranteed to finish in second spot.
They are currently on 60 points and have a superior goal difference (40) over their closest rivals, Mukura VS (18 goals), who are in third position with 57 points and have one game to the end of the season.
Elsewhere, Police FC registered a 2-0 win over visitors Marines FC at Kicukiro stadium. Striker Danny Usengimana scored his 14th goal of the season while Japhet Hakizimana Irambona netted the other.
Away in Rubavu, Etincelles thrashed visitors Bugesera FC 3-0 at Umuganda stadium to amass 32 points and move into the top 10 in the league.
Meanwhile, action will continue on Wednesday when Rayon Sports travel to Rusizi to take on Espoir FC before the league climaxes on Sunday, a day when champions APR FC will be handed the league trophy.
