V-ball: UNIK start playoffs with three straight wins

UNIVERSITY OF KIBUNGO (UNIK) volleyball club has edged closer to retaining the league title after winning all their three playoffs games in the opening round on Sunday in Huye District.

UNIVERSITY OF KIBUNGO (UNIK) volleyball club has edged closer to retaining the league title after winning all their three playoffs games in the opening round on Sunday in Huye District.

The defending champions beat hosts IPRC-South 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19) in the opening match before beating Kirehe 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 23-25). Dominique Ntawangundi’s team went on to beat archrivals and former champions APR 3-1 (3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-21).

UNIK, formerly INATEK, lead the table with 45 points, while Pierre Marshal Kwizera’s Kirehe jumped to second place with 37 points after winning two games, while APR dropped to third with 36 points and IPRC-South are in fourth place with 25.

UNIK coach Ntawangundi said, "We want to win every game, if we are to have a chance to retain the title.”

"APR, Kirehe and IPRC-South are all good teams and they have always been, but we are confident about our chances of beating them in next matches,” he added.

The playoffs will continue next weekend at Amahoro indoor stadium while the following weekend, the games will go to Ngoma, the home of UNIK before winding up in Kirehe District for round four.
