[LETTERS] First deal with the visa issue for Africans

RE: "Will creation of an all-Africa passport deliver African unity?” (The New Times, July 9).

Please walk the talk and show action. Give us (AU citizens) visas upon arrival in all member states, at least for now. If heads of states can resolve on "visa upon arrival”, then Kigali AU Summit will have been a historical success.

It is almost two years since Rwanda started the visas upon arrival exercise to all people from African countries. Let all other countries on the continent follow the example of Rwanda.

It should go much further than merely getting a visa on arrival.

An African passport-holder should be entitled to visa-free travel across the countries that issue such passports in the same manner like an European Union (EU) passport (issued by all EU member states to their nationals in a standard colored cover with both the EU and the country’s name included on the cover) entitles the holder to travel within the EU visa-free and hassle-free.

Otherwise what are the practical benefits for African citizens holding the African passport?
