Rwanda National Police and the City of Kigali have provided alternative routes for road users in regard to blocked roads to control and ensure smooth traffic flow.

The new arrangement is also meant to facilitate the traffic flow during the course of the 27th African Union Summit that starts on July 10 in Kigali.

RNP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa said the new traffic plan will divert all roads connecting to KBC main roundabout in Kimihurura, which is next to Kigali Convention Centre, the venue of the AU Summit and Giporoso-Kanombe road.

"All roads that connect to KBC roundabout next to Kigali Convention Center are blocked. Road users from Kabindi junction heading to Gisementi or other areas along that direction will diverge to the new route before KBC, to the new roundabout next to the Netherlands Embassy and reroute to the new road connecting to the new roundabout at Minijust (Ministry of Justice),” ACP Twahirwa said.

Those traveling to Kanombe, he said, will use the new road that diverges after Cyamitsingi, which connects to the old road before Gasaraba and this is the same route that will be used by those coming from Kanombe military hospital road heading to Giporoso.

Those going to the airport, will enter through the junction after Gasaraba and those existing will head straight to the new roundabout opposite MAGERWA

"Traffic officers are deployed along the mentioned roads to facilitate road users.”

ACP Twahirwa, however, advised road users especially those with vehicles, to use other available alternative routes like Kabeza-Niboye-Rwandex, the road behind RDB that connects to the junction before Amahoro stadium and Kibagabaga-Gacuriro-Utexrwa-Kinamba road.

Security

Meanwhile, the spokesperson explained that RNP is "well prepared” to further ensure the safety and security in the course of the summit.

"All services to ensure public order, road safety and immediate response to emergencies and eventualities like fire are active to maintain safer environment as it has been with other many international meetings that Rwanda has hosted successfully in the past,” he said.
