Rwanda’s latest entrant into the golf professional ranks, Jules Mutesa Dusabe, yesterday arrived in Mbarara, Uganda ahead of this year’s Mbarara Golf open that is set to tee-off today and run until July 9 at the par 70, 9 hole Mbarara sports club.
The 30-year-old will be vying for a good start at the professional podium after qualifying on February 23 at Kitante golf club, alongside 14 Ugandans. During the two-day event, Dusabe shot 73 on the first day and 75 the second day.
"I am well prepared for this Open and I have been training for the past two months. I have been at Mbarara Golf club several times as an amateur and I feel confident of winning it,” said Dusabe in an interview with Times Sport yesterday.
Dusabe is currently seeded number five after Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, Emmanuel Ruterana, Ernest Ndayisenga and Olivier Munyaneza seeded in that order.
"It’s a disadvantage when you represent the country alone; sometimes it adds pressure on you. However, I’m optimistic that the experience I have will guide me to the top,” he added.
The tournament returned last year after nine years of absence and this year’s edition is set to attract hundreds of golfers in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Uganda national golf captain Adolf Muhumza is the defending champion. According to the organisers, this year’s winner will bag Shs15m (Rwf3.4m).
