Police in Nyamasheke District have arrested seven men suspected to be involved in criminal activities in Bushenge sector

The suspects were arrested following information provided to the police by local leaders and residents of Nyamasheke District.

Commenting on the arrest, the District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police (SP) Justin Rukara said, "We had acquired information from local leaders and residents about the suspects and their areas of operation. ”

He commended the public for their cooperation and noted that, "Residents now understand well the concept of community policing and are committed to strongly fight crime in their areas.”

The suspects were identified as Amiel Niyonsaba, Joseph Rukundo, Samuel Hakizimana, Zachée Harerimana, Olivier Byiringiro, Sion Kwizera, and Emmanuel Nsengiyumva. They are currently held at Shangi Police station.

Local leaders of Bushenge Sector and residents had tipped the police of possible areas where the suspects commit their criminal activities.

The DPC said that the suspects normally stole money and mobile phones from by-passers.

Among the suspects include three brothers; they were arrested recently in Kagatamu Cell of Bushenge sector as they staged an ambush to steal from early morning travelers.

Niyonsaba, Rukundo and Hakizimana lived in the same house.

When police searched the brothers’ house, they found pellets of cannabis, which police said evidently influenced their criminal behaviour.
