APR FC will face archrivals Rayon Sports in the final of the 2016 Peace Cup on July 4 at Amahoro National Stadium. It will be a clash of egos as Rwanda’s two biggest clubs face off.
Rayon Sports will be looking to avoid a repeat of last year’s defeat in the Peace Cup final. Rayon beat AS Kigali 3-2 in the second leg on Friday at Muhanga Regional Stadium to go through on 4-3 goal aggregate, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Burundi international forward Pierrot Kwizera netted a brace in the 15th and 44th minute while Ismaili Diarra scored the other goal in the 33rd minute. Forwards Hamidou Ndayisaba and Justin Mico were on target for the 2013 winners, AS Kigali in the 23rd and 38th minutes respectively.
Rayon Sports, seeking a first Peace Cup title in 10 years, dominated the game but Diarra and Emmanuel Imanishimwe missed their chances while Eric Nshimiyimana’s AS Kigali also had chances but missed through Mico, Ernest Sugira Ndayisaba and Onesme Twizerimana.
In the first leg both sides played 1-all draw on Tuesday, thanks to Pierrot Kwizera, who netted for Djuma Masudi’s side in the 13th minute while Onesme Twizerimana equalized for the City of Kigali-sponsored AS Kigali in the 79th minute.
At Kigali Regional Stadium, midfielder Janvier Benedata scored a 90th minute long range goal as APR saw off Espoir FC 1-0 to book their place in the final. The first leg ended in a goalless draw in Rusizi.
The winner of this year’s tournament will represent Rwanda at next year’s CAF Confederation Cup. The defending champions Police FC were eliminated by Amagaju FC in the round of 16.
