After the defending champions Police FC bowed out of Peace Cup at the hands of national football league rivals Amagaju FC, head coach Andre Casa Mbungo has described it as a season of bad luck for his team, but promised to come back stronger next season.
With an early exit from the knockout competition and a distant 5th position on the league table, Police FC will end the season empty-handed.
Amagaju’s reward for eliminating the champions is a date with AS Kigali in the last eight on Saturday. Eric Nshimiyimana’s AS Kigali reached the last eight after seeing off Etincelles FC 1-0 at Muhanga Regional Stadium.
Police FC scored their penalties through Isaie Songa, JMV Muvandimwe, Innocent Habyarimana, Danny Usengimana and Amran Nshimiyimana. Only skipper, Fabrice Twagizimana missed his kick.
For Abdu ‘Becken’ Bizimana’s team, Innocent Ndizeye, Jean Dieu Manishimwe, Yumba Kaite, Noel Bizimana, Arafat Sibomana, Rodriguez Buregeya and Abdalah Hategekimana netted all seven spot kicks.
"We have been very unlucky this season. In this particular game, we dominated and created several scoring opportunities but failed to use them,” Mbungo said after the match.
The former SEC Academy and AS Kigali coach added that, "We have to accept defeat today, but I promise we will be a much stronger team in next season.”
Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the biggest tie of the round between seven-time Peace Cup winners APR FC and SC Kiyovu.
APR came from behind to defeat 10-man Bugesera FC 2-1 at Kicukiro stadium. Bienvenu Mugenzi and Issa Bigirimana scored for the military side, to cancel out Frank Makengo’s early opener for Abdul Bizimungu’s side.
Bugesera ended the match with 10 players after Jacques Ntwali was sent off by referee Barthazar Ahishakiye, for a second bookable offence following his tackle on APR midfielder Patrick Sibomana midway through the second half.
SC Kiyovu needed a late Andre Lomami penalty to overcome Sunrise FC in a slim 1-0 victory in the early kick off at Kicukiro stadium.
