It’s an early Christmas gift for entertainment businesses in the country after Rwanda Development Board (RDB) relaxed the existing nighttime restrictions, lifting them on the weekends altogether.
The new guidelines, published Thursday evening, will come into effect Friday, December 15 through January 7, 2024.
According to an RDB statement signed by its chief executive Francis Gatare, hospitality establishments, including hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, will be allowed to operate until 2a.m on Mondays through Thursday, and to remain open throughout Fridays, weekends and on public holidays.
The guidelines apply to private events as well, it added.

"The end of the year festive season has begun, and the Government of Rwanda wants people to celebrate and enjoy,” the statement reads in part. "That is why the Rwanda Development Board has set temporary operating hours for the season...”
However, RDB warned against violations, urging compliance. "All establishments must abide by noise pollution regulations and be respectful of those who request rest.”

It added, "everyone is expected to regulate themselves; however, RDB, in coordination with other relevant Government institutions, will ensure proper implementation of these guidelines. Entities found in violation of these directives will be held accountable.”
The regulator also noted that that it is illegal to serve alcohol to persons under 18 years of age, or to "a visibly intoxicated” person. "Consumers are urged to drink responsibly, and not drive under the influence of alcohol.”
