160 Rwanda Police officers serving as Formed Police Unit (FPU) under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) were on Thursday decorated for their outstanding work in the Caribbean nation.

The officers were also recognized for their exceptional partnership with other peacekeepers and the local people to ensure security and peace.

While presiding over the medal awarding ceremony, Alexandre Carl, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General hailed the Rwandan government for its contribution in bringing peace in Haiti and across the world.

He expressed satisfaction of the duties performed, applauded the discipline and professionalism displayed by the Rwandan Police officers during their one year long mandate.

Carl Alexandre also commended RWAFPU in Haiti for their role in supporting Haitian police and Joint operations with UN Police (UNPOL).

The contingent commander of Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Haiti, Commissioner of Police (CP) Joseph Mugisha, in his remarks, said that "respecting the UN core values of professionalism, integrity and respect of diversity partly contributed to the contingent’s success.”

CP Mugisha thanked other peacekeepers for the teamwork providing security especially during last year’s general elections.

RNP contingents in Haiti are also fond of conducting community works such as rehabilitating roads, supporting orphans and responding to disasters like floods, which has built a strong relationship between them and the Haitians.

RNP has been deploying peacekeepers to Haiti since a catastrophic earthquake in 2010 that killed over 100,000 people and displaced over three million others.
