The regional edition of the annual Gisembe memorial basketball tournament gets underway today at different venues across the City of Kigali.

The three-day competition has attracted a total of 16 teams from Rwanda, DR Congo and Burundi competing for honours in different categories—the finals will be played on Sunday at Amahoro indoor stadium.

The tournament kicks off with the men’s category, where organizers and reigning champions Espoir drawn in Pool A, will begin title defence against DR Congo’s Boundess this afternoon at Cercile Sportif de Kigali (CSK), before IPRC-Kigali take on Goma Bulls (DR Congo) later at 7pm, at the same venue.

Pool B games will be played at Maison de Jeune Kimisagara ground, local league champions Patriots will be up against DR Congo’s PJB-Goma at 5pm, which will be followed by the encounter between Burundi’s Dynamo and DR Congo’s AMI BK at 7pm.

Games in the women and Veterans’ category will start tomorrow, where Burundi’s Berco Stars will play against PJB-Goma from DR Congo at National Paralympic Committee gymnasium while Rwanda’s APR will be battling DR Congo’s Scandanavia at Amahoro indoor stadium.

In the veterans’ category, Rwandan sides; United Generation Basketball and Espoir will face-off at 1pm, Amahoro indoor stadium while at the same time, DR Congo’s Bakolo lock horns with CSK at NPC gymnasium.

Teams in all pools will play each other in a round-robin format and the top two will qualify for the semi-finals. Rwanda’s Espoir (men) and Berco Stars (women) from Burundi and Bakolo (veterans) from DRC are the defending champions.
