Over 80 golfers are expected to take part in this year’s Genocide memorial golf tournament that is slated for this Saturday at the Kigali golf club course in Nyarutarama, according to the club president, Luis Kamanzi.

Taking place for the third time, the one-day event has been organized in conjunction with the Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC) and Rwanda National Olympic and Sports committee (RNOSC). It will attract only amateurs in both men and women categories.

"The tournament is open to only Kigali Golf Club members, we have a membership total ranging between 120-150; however, we expect over 80 to be part of this year’s edition because some are not in the country,” Kamanzi said in an interview with Times Sport.

The tourney will feature four different groups; including the men handicap 0-9, 10-18, 19-28 and the seniors’ category, which will comprise players over the age of 55 as well as the ladies category.

The mode of play will be Stableford for the handicapped players, says Kamanzi.

The tournament is organized in honor of golfers, who died during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, including Anselme Sakumi, Dr. Charles Munyangeyo and Gerard Bakaka, among others.

The memorial competition comes a week after the inaugural Karongi Tea Factory golf tournament, which attracted over 100 participants, which was won by Dr. Davis Kashaka with a gross score of 77 points while Ola Rwiyamirira won the ladies title with a net score of 70 points.
