A gunman killed 13 people, including seven children, at a school in central Russia on Monday, September 26, the TASS news agency reported.

The motive for the attack in the city of Izhevsk, about 970 km east of Moscow, was unclear, the interior ministry said, adding the gunman subsequently killed himself.

Officials had said earlier that the gunman killed nine people.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said the unidentified attacker was found wearing a balaclava (a form of cloth headgear designed to expose only part of the face, usually the eyes and mouth) and a black t-shirt with Nazi symbols.

Apart from the children, the committee said other victims included teachers and security guards, according to the TASS news agency.

Some 20 more people were injured, according to the interior ministry.

Reuters said Russia had seen several school shootings in recent years.

In April this year, two children and a teacher were killed at a kindergarten by an armed man, who subsequently committed suicide.

In May 2021, a teenager killed nine people including seven children in the city of Kazan.
