Residents receive heifers

GAKENKE — At least 67 struggling families in Janja and Muzo sectors in Gakenke district have received Friesian heifers donated by the PAPSTE and Heifer International. The donation is part of the government programme of One cow-One family.

Felician Mporanyimana, the vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, noted that the cows would improve the health of young children and enhance the economic levels of residents.

The beneficiaries, who were drawn from the sectors which are said to be among the poorest areas of the district, were asked to carefully look after the animals, as a source of milk, and fertilisers, to enable them enhance their health and promote agriculture.  

Mporanyimana called upon the area residents to speed up work on their set goals in order to rise from poverty.

Angela Nyirampayimana, one of the beneficiaries said she would use the cows to support her family.
