Sudanese government on Tuesday said it would not review the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), official SUNA news agency reported.

"The DDPD will not be reviewed and its items are not subject to reopening of negotiation,” the report quoted Amin Hassan Omer, head of Sudan’s Darfur peace follow-up office, as saying. Omer slammed calls of reviewing DDPD, noting that it has become part of the country’s constitution, and any amendment should get parliament approval by two thirds of the members. On Monday, leader of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) Minni Arko Minnawi called for reviewing the DDPD. Late last month, Qatar’s mediator consulted in Doha with the leader of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Jibril Ibrahim, as well as Minni Minnawi regarding joining the Darfur peace deal.

The rebel JEM, SLM/Abdul-Wahid Mohamed Nur faction as well as the SLM/Minni Minnawi faction all rejected the DDPD, claiming it did not meet the demands of Darfur’s population.The rebel JEM and SLM have previously asked Qatar to play a more prominent role with respect to mediation with the Sudanese government. They wanted the Sudanese government to join the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan, led by Thabo Mbeki, to bridge the differences between rivals. However, the government rejected the armed groups’ proposal.
