THE National women sitting Volleyball team will have a ten-day training camp and also compete in a sitting volleyball tournament in the Netherlands from June 25 to July 4 as part of their preparations ahead of the Rio Olympic Games.
National Paralympics Committee (NPC) Secretary General Eric Karasira said the training clinic will give the National team coaches a good assessment of the team.
"We expect this training camp to be our last camp on our road to Rio and we hope it will be a crucial moment because the team will also have an opportunity to compete in the Dutch sitting volleyball tournament slated for July 1-3 to see where they stand before heading to Rio,” said Karasira.
According to Karasira during their stay in the Netherlands, they will play friendly matches against the strongest club teams in the Netherlands, the Dutch National Team and participate in the Dutch tournament.
In this particular Dutch tournament, more strong countries from all over the world will participate including USA, Slovenia, Russia, Italy, China plus hosts Netherlands.
Peter Karreman’s team made history last July when they came from a set down to beat African giants Egypt 3-2 in the final of African qualifiers for this year’s Paralympic Games, an achievement that was ranked at number three in the International Paralympic Committee’s Top 50 Moments of the year 2015.
Currently the team holds training sessions over the weekends at NPC Gymnasium under the guidance of assistant coach Jean-Marie Nsengiyumva however since qualifying last year, the team has had two training camps including, the first one in Slovenia, Europe in October last year and also competed the Intercontinental Cup that took place in March in Hangzhou City in China.
