Today I see a light shine at the end of a dark tunnel, I see myself standing with the billions of people that make up the world, with a torch that guides me to that light. My torch beams with the rays of hope and faith in a belief- that the world still stands a chance to be a better place.

I live in a world where chaos and mayhem seems to be the order of the day, where many of us have stopped believing in the norms and principles that guide people to live together as one.

It no longer shocks me to watch scenes in DR Congo of mothers crying as their children watch the bleak future unfolding before their eyes, I can only cry.

It is no longer so overwhelming to watch our soldiers flown back in coffins to be buried honourably after fighting in a war where for every one life they saved, three more die across the streets from them, I only pray for the living.

It is no longer so frustrating to kneel down and pray for change in a world ruled by disorder, anger and vengeance, only to open your eyes and hear a gunshot right outside your window, I am saddened.

I am no longer as guilt ridden by the poverty stricken cries of nations that have to scruple for food, clothing and shelter while the surrounding wealthier countries stand by and watch,  I just watch too. We as human beings have hit rock bottom, we have accepted to be lower than scum and to be ruled by those who preach human dishonour, total chaos and are controlled by their own egocentric needs- to hold power in their hands.

But today, the whole world stood behind a vision that is different from the ones that world leaders have sang for decades and decades. I am proud to say that I have only seen this vision in my President- and now another leader joins him in the cause for the goodness, righteousness and justice.

On this day the 5th November 2008 , a dream was revived,  a dream that was expressed to millions of people 45 years ago, in Washington DC, by a man who had an extra ordinary vision- to see a black man judged not by the colour of his skin, but by the strength of his character. On this day, four and a half decades later, Martin Luther King Jr, had his dream realized.

Watching President-elect Barak Obama speak today, gave me a sense of pride to see a man of my colour speak to the whole world about unity and equality-just as Martin Luther King Jr had predicted.

Today, I see a crowd of black, white, yellow cultures stand together with tears of joy stream down their faces, as elation spreads like a virus throughout the world, and this gives me joy.

But even more so, I feel hope creep back into my life. I started to believe again that the world isn’t such a horrible place anymore, and I could wish for the basic fundamental things in life, like peace, happiness, equality and caring in the world-and be granted that wish.

As the first Black US President called on the world to stand for his cause for change- I mentally stood beside him without a moment’s hesitation. On this day, he proved that the whole world has taken the first step towards change- and that in itself is change.
 
As I walk through the walls of my office, I am amazed at how many people have responded to this victory, and not like it belongs to one man, but to the whole world. The enormous responsibility that President Obama begins to carry today, showed on his face as he addressed the crowd in Chicago.

He did not smile and whoop with joy, but sombrely accepted the hearts of a people crying for a better world to bring up the generations to come. I see the dream for a new world come true in the hands of Obama, and like the billions we shall stand behind him like a solid rock-and we shall overcome!
