Secrets to healthy, moisturised skin: Causes, remedies for dryness
Tuesday, December 12, 2023

Some individuals struggle with persistent dry and itchy skin, which can lead to discomfort and embarrassment. This urge to scratch can be present continuously or intermittently and is often caused by dryness.

Skin dryness can have various causes. As people age, their skin loses elasticity and moisture, leading to dryness. Exposure to dust, extreme cold, or hot weather can also rob the skin of moisture. Taking very hot showers and using excessive soap or chemical-based cleansing solutions can also deplete the skin's moisture, resulting in dryness.

Deficiency of vitamin B, particularly B3 and B5, can result in dry and itchy skin. Thyroid hormone deficiency and diabetes mellitus are medical conditions that can also cause dry skin. Collagen disorders like scleroderma can lead to intense dryness and tightness of the skin. This condition predominantly affects middle-aged women.

Many cosmetic products, especially anti-acne ones, contain chemicals that can cause skin dryness. Chlorine in water can also contribute to dryness. Certain medications used to reduce water and salt in the body, or to treat lipid abnormalities, can have dry skin as a side effect. In some cases, dry skin is simply inherited.

Whatever the reasons for dry skin, it is uncomfortable for the affected person. In cases of extreme dryness, the affected area looks ungainly, such as cracked lips or heels. Additionally, these areas can become a source of secondary infections as well. Scratching a dry, itchy area can result in the formation of boils as germs can spread there from the dirt below and around the nails.

Every individual strives to prevent dry skin. To do so, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Protect yourself from dust, and very hot or cold weather. Avoid hot showers and opt for lukewarm water for bathing. Use minimal soap and refrain from vigorously drying the skin after washing or bathing. Apply a moisturizing lotion, Vaseline, or glycerin while the body is still damp to help retain moisture. Massaging natural oils such as coconut or olive oil before showering is also beneficial.

Drinking plenty of water also helps to moisturize the skin. Fresh fruits like papaya, leafy vegetables, whole grains, and nuts contain essential nutrients for improving the texture of dry skin.

There are numerous lotions and creams for preventing dry skin. One should determine if they are useful and not causing any harm or allergies. There are also many home remedies and herbal products that are said to be beneficial for dry skin, such as face packs of papaya, avocado, and aloe vera, which can provide a smooth complexion and skin.

In addition to these measures, maintaining a regular sleep schedule also aids in keeping the skin moist and beautiful. Furthermore, having regular bowel movements is beneficial. To achieve this, a high-fiber diet and ample water intake are necessary.

Any underlying medical cause for dry skin can be easily detected through clinical history, examination, and relevant laboratory tests. Most of these conditions are treatable.

Any form of regular exercise helps eliminate toxins from the body through sweat, keeping the skin moisturised and radiant. It is very important to know that both alcohol and tobacco are detrimental to the skin, so those seeking beautiful skin should avoid them.
