Cycling: Tour de Gisagara set on Saturday

For the second year running, Gisagara District has organised a one-day cycling competition named Tour de Gisagara, with this year’s edition slated for Saturday.

For the second year running, Gisagara District has organised a one-day cycling competition named Tour de Gisagara, with this year’s edition slated for Saturday.

The race aims ate defecting young talent and raising awareness about HIV/Aids, and drug abuse among the youth.

According to organisers, over 72 riders (men and women) have registered for the competition and the race will cover 63km (men) and 20km for women.

"We are partaking in the process to scout and identify future riders for Team Rwanda and local clubs,” the head of youth, sports and culture in the district, Dieudone Twagirayezu, told this paper.

"We are expecting more riders to register for the event and believe we stage a good event,” he added.

The race will cover: Rwabuye – Imberabyombi-Huye – Kaminuza – Tumba – Rango – Nkubi – Sahera – Kansi – Kibirizi – Mubishya – Muganza – Ndora – Musha – Rwanza – Inzu mberabyombi/Huye in the men’s category, while women will ride though Musha-Save-Rwasave-Kabutare, finishing at the Inzu mberabyombi-Huye.

The winners in both the men and women categories in the above 20 years’ groups will receive Rwf50, 000 and a sports bike; while the U20 winners will receive Rwf50, 000 each.

Last year’s race – the inaugural edition – was won by 25-year old Jean Claude Munyamahoro after clocking 02h30’2” followed by Mathieu Twizeyimana (2h32’29’) while Jean Pierre Ahorukomeye (2h33’14’) finished the second runner-up.
