RE: "Affordable housing: CoK urges private sector to invest in real estate” (The New Times, May 31).

The City of Kigali should concentrate on housing that touches directly the lives of the majority, residents whose earnings cannot afford them the so-called affordable housing, with a unit going for a minimum of Rwf20 million.

A graduate earning below Rwf500,000 would only need a two bedroom house, at between Rwf30,000-Rwf100,000 a month. Surprisingly, no private firm seems to be targeting people who follow into that band.

Thus, this calls for the national housing authority to build its own houses for rental purposes. The objective wouldn't be business per se but it would be out of a sense of responsibility.
