Robbers on Thursday morning broke into Agaseke Bank’s Rubavu Branch, taking off with over Rwf53 million, Police said.

Speaking to The New Times, yesterday, Chief Inspector of Police Theobald Kanamugire said they had in detention two security guards for allegedly being involved in the robbery as investigations continued.

The duo, according to Kanamugire, is detained at Gisenyi Police Post.

"The bank reported that it had lost about Rwf53 million. We shall leave no stone unturned to bring everybody involved to account,” he said, adding that the robbers were also armed, which aggravates the crime.Armed robbery is a crime punishable under article 304 of the Penal Code, he said.

The bank’s deputy managing director (and current acting managing director), Béata Habyarimana, told The New Times that despite the robbery, the bank will continue its operations normally.

She added that the actual amount of money stolen is not yet known but an audit was underway to establish it.

Habyarimana said, "The bank has insurance for customers’ money and our services will continue as usual as we wait for what comes out of the investigations.’’ Agaseke bank has over Rwf15 billion in total assets and about 8,000 customers.
