News that the Rwanda civil society will commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi has been welcomed by Ibuka, the umbrella organization for Genocide survivors. This is the first time the platform is holding the commemoration as one entity.
Over 3,000 people from over 400 organisations will tomorrow, Friday 27, gather at Amahoro Indoor Stadium, to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
"We welcome this step by the Civil Society Platform. They are a big and important number of people in our community and we are happy they thought about it. This will help in sensitising the population about genocide ideology and other vices related to genocide. ” said Prof Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu, the president of Ibuka.
Ibuka is itself a member of the platform.
"During this commemoration, we have many things lined up. There will be discussions with the members of the civil society that we hope will help educate them about the plight of Genocide survivors. Commemoration period is a good time to raise awareness about the various problems that still affect Genocide survivors,” Dusingizemungu added.
According to the programme of the day released by the Rwanda Civil Society Platform (RCSP), the event will start at 4pm with a Walk to Remember that will lead participants to the stadium.
It will feature speakers including the Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the fight against Genocide (CNLG), Prof Anastase Shyaka, the CEO of Rwanda Governance Board, and Dusingizemungu, among others.
