Areruya wins Kivu cycling race

Les Amis Sportifs Rwamagana rider, Joseph Areruya won the Kivu Cycling Race after covering the 117 kilometre race in 3 hours, 15 minutes and 37 seconds on Saturday.

Les Amis Sportifs Rwamagana rider, Joseph Areruya won the Kivu Cycling Race after covering the 117 kilometre race in 3 hours, 15 minutes and 37 seconds on Saturday.

The win comes as relief for Areruya who failed to impress in last weekend’s ‘Race to Remember.’

The 20-year-old also won the best young rider award and went home with Rwf100,000 for winning the race plus Rwf60, 000 for emerging victorious in the U-23 category.

Cine Elmay, cyclist Jeremy Karegeya and Les Amis Sportif’s Jean Claude Uwizeye came in second and third positions respectively.

The Under18, 101.9km Men’s category was won by Eric Imanizabayo followed by Janvier Rugamba.

Benediction Club rider, Patrick Byukusenge did not feature in race as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained last weekend after winning the Race to Remember from, Bugesera to Kigali. Riders will accumulate points from each race and at the end the season, the rider with the highest number of points will be overall national champion.

The Rwanda Cycling Cup will end on October 23, less than a month before the start of Tour du RwandaLaunched last year, the Rwanda Cycling Cup is aimed at discovering young talented cyclists, who can be trained to join the national team for future international competitions.
