Rayon Sports’ league title hopes are hanging in balance after settling for a 1-1 draw against Gicumbi FC at Kigali Regional Stadium yesterday, handing league leaders APR FC the initiative in the title race.
Forward Antoine Dominic Ndayishimiye scored the opening goal for Gicumbi FC in the 78th minute before Malian import, Ismailia Diarra equalized through a penalty in the 83rd minute.
Ndayishimiye netted the goal after eliminating three defenders, but five minutes later, Savio Dominique Nshuti was brought down in the box to win a penalty for Rayon, which was converted by Diarra.
If APR win their remaining six games, they will be crowned champions even if Rayon Sports wins all their six remaining games.
For Rayon Sports to win the title, APR must lose one game, and the former must win all their remaining games.
Djuma Irambona Masudi’s team has 53 points, two behind table leaders APR who will play against SC Kiyovu this afternoon at Kigali Regional Stadium.
Gicumbi dominated the second half but failed to beat Rayon Sports goalie Eric ‘Bakame’ Ndayishimiye. After the draw Gicumbi remains in eighth position with 31 points.
Five Gicumbi FC players including Fidele Mutuyingabo, former Rayon Sports defender, Aimable ‘Mambo’ Rucogoza, Ndayishimiye, Rashid Mutebi and Shadad Nsengayire got yellow cards while Olivier ‘Seff’ Niyonzima was the only Rayon player booked during the game. Elsewhere Bugesera FC beat Sunrise FC 2-1 at home.
Meanwhile action continues today with Marines FC hosting AS Kigali at Umuganda Stadium, struggling Musanze FC plays against flying Etincelles FC at Nyakinama turf.
Bottom side Rwamagana City FC will meet AS Muhanga at Rwamagana ground; in the Southern derby, Amagaju FC will be entertaining Mukura VS at Nyagisenyi turf, in Nyamagabe
Defending champions APR FC will be looking for a win when they host SC Kiyovu at Kigali Regional Stadium while Espoir FC will host Police FC in Rusizi District.
